I will talk about a place that is basically only mentioned toward the end of the book, Cavanal Hill. In the story it is where the McMurchaid family's personal items and household furnishings were stored after they were stranded at Valhalla on the moon.
The original reason for the shaft and chamber being dug and built are never mentioned nor was in anything within Odin's memory storage. The main thing is that to insure people wouldn't steal or vandalize the McMurchaid's things until their return (if ever) a vault and special doors were installed to protect those items. To further protect those items the entrance was covered and well hidden once everything was sealed. It was figured that there were people who would try to make money selling a number of those items considering the McMurchaids were "deceased" national/world heroes.
Cavanal Hill is real and is located near Poteau, Oklahoma. It is known as the world's highest hill. It is known by a few in the area as "Mount Cavanal" or "Cavanal Mountain".
My wife and I have been to it and on top of it. You definitely cannot miss it when near it. It also has a smaller hill at Cavanal Hill's base where the Poteau Runestone was found by local boys on a class field trip. Amongst the students on that field trip was Denise's sister.
