A Family of Time

    Loki's Breath -  As touched upon in an early portion of the book, this gas had many attributes but had only been studied for a short time. It does suspend body functions, but unlike many suspended animation techniques this works all the way down to the cellular level. The cells do not deteriorate under the gas, so there are no downsides to it such as weakened muscles, disorientation, etc as there would be using other hibernation systems.

    Also touched on early in the book there had been indications that it could improve ailments throughout the body. None of the scientists knew why, but they suspected that there was regeneration of damaged cells. Since war broke out before the family was to be awakened after their tests, no further tests were done so any speculation was made on the earlier but shorter tests.

    Also mentioned was the fact that information could be fed to subjects under Loki's Breath and those people retained that information. Again this was data from the earlier tests which were for periods less than a month. The scientists speculated that, for similar reasons cells were regenerated, the brain's memory function connectors were improved. All this information was gather from a short period of testing which ranged from one hour under up to one month under on several subjects.

    It is now up to the family and the computer, Odin, to figure out what actually happened during the 455 year period the family was in Loki's Breath. They all have speculations but so far no definite answers since they have been busy since their awakening. They are understandably curious about any and all changes. In the sequel they start to check a few possibilities out, but they don't push any tests too far for understandable reasons. They find out new abilities mostly under stress related circumstances. The extent of these abilities will be found out over time and under further study.

    As the story continues in later books of this to be series, more understanding about Loki's Breath grows. The gifts that this gas has given the family will at first puzzle the family as the gifts reveal themselves. As each book is published, more will be revealed and a better understanding as to why the gas has changed the family. Unfortunately presently I cannot say more until the next book is published. Many more surprises are to be wrought.
