A Family of Time
Crust/Mantle and Magnetic Poles Shift
Crust/Mantle and Magnetic Poles Shift
In the story I mention how the earth looks different to the MacMurchaids after they awake from their 455 years of 'pseudo death'. The crust has shifted about 180 degrees and the magnetic poles have flipped positions. Some scientists have been looking at rocks from different locations from around the world. These rocks show the magnetic alignment when they solidified on top of the mantle. Rocks near each other in certain areas show they were made at different times, but they also show variances in their magnetic alignment they were made. A few scientists speculate that sometime in the future the magnetic poles are due for another shift. As for when they do not know, but usually the crust remains in its general position when this does happen.
The crust is always moving due to tectonic movement. This movement is relatively slow in human terms, but it is being monitored as best as the scientists can monitor such things. From this movement we get earthquakes and volcanoes. These earthquakes and volcanoes can reshape land masses and affect the environment in different ways. To date there has been no evidence found to my knowledge that shows the crust/mantle has shifted as I have mentioned in the story. Basically, for this to happen and the magnetic poles shifting in relativity to it, the core of the earth would most likely have to heat up drastically or become very turbulent.
In the story I do not investigate why these things did happen, I just note what the MacMurchaids have noticed. Even they aren't sure if it was due to the ninety-nine-year war, natural causes, or a combination of the two. Due to some destruction of communications on earth and along with the loss of satellites, Odin couldn't record scientific data for it. He could only gather data from the remaining satellites and the observation satellites near Lunar Sister.
I think it might be best if I leave this type to scientists or the imaginative minds of other writers and screenwriters in the movie business. Doomsday may not mean the end of life, but it does change how life handles the outcome. You can also use your own imagination to come up with reasons for what I have covered here.
Below is an image of earth from NASA which I have rotated 180 degrees to give a close example of what the MacMurchaids may have seen after their awakening. Granted this picture does not show any of the landmass changes caused by the shift, earthquakes and volcanoes, but it does give a little perspective of their view how Earth Mother has changed.

On 8 August 2022, I tried to better explain on Facebook the how and why earth looks different to the MacMurchaid family. Here is how I explained it and I am sure that some scientists will disagree with what I wrote but it is a science fiction novel. This my vision of what happened.
Something that was asked of me that apparently wasn't made clear in the first book. Why does the earth appear different to the family? When the family went into hibernation, also known as pseudo-death, earth was pretty much similar as we see it today. During their hibernation the crust realigned to what they saw. Do to a variety of circumstances such as the wars, vulcanism, earthquakes, and the rising plus falling of land masses, they see a world slightly familiar but upside down. The earth's core did not shift nor did it change its rotation. The crust did all the rotation of 180 degrees and shifting. Once the crust finally settled, now what was north is now south, what was south is now north, what was east is now west, and what was west is now east.
The daily rotation did not change for the core and much of how the earth works, but now to the family it appears that the sun rises on during the twentieth century would have been the west and sets in the east. It can be confusing, but since this happened during the four hundred plus years the family was in hibernation the people of earth adapted to the changes. Also due to the shifting of the crust much of the ice on earth had melted causing sea levels to rise, but once the crust settled the ice and snow began to form again on the poles and in higher locations. It will take centuries for the sea levels to return to what they were when the family left earth.
Luckily for the people of earth, the orbit of the planet did not vary much during this period of time otherwise they may not have survived a climate change caused by moving closer to or further away from the sun. As a person can guess during that shift the weather patterns changed, but now they are settling into similar patterns as before the shift.
Hopefully I haven't confused people more by this explanation. I am hoping that this will help people use their imaginations to see the earth as the family sees it in the future. In the sequels I try to explain things a little better as the family begins to come to terms with their new lives and abilities. I realize that if the book was taken and made into a visual format it might help people to see what I have visualize as I wrote all I have so far.
Enjoy the first book and when I am able I will let everyone know when the next book might be published.

An approximate view of how the earth looked after the MacMurchaids awoke from their pseudo-death.

To give you a better idea how different the earth looks I will try to explain a few things a little more. Since the polar ice caps haven't refrozen completely yet, many islands and coastal regions would be now underwater. An example is the region where Central America meets South America would be underwater. Using some of the predictions that are presently illustrated concerning global warming or climate change show areas along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico of North America will also be underwater. It is also hard for me to fully envision such things happening. The reason the ice caps are just starting to reform is during the crustal shift both polar regions spent time at the equator.
Since the crustal shift was 180 degrees from north to south, such a shift would have what was once in the eastern hemisphere would now be in the western hemisphere and vica versa. The photo on this page how the earth might look from the moon. North America would be seen in the southern hemisphere and South America would be in the northern hemisphere.
Considering the rotation of the earth did not change, the sunrise would still happen the same except that with everything flipped what would now be the east coasts were once the west coasts of continents. Since by the time the MacMurchaids woke up in the first book everyone was used to this change and didn't think anything about it. The family were the only people who would recognize the changes. This was the reason Denise MacMurchaid brought to the attention of the rest of the family.
All of these changes made it harder for them to locate Cavanal Hill. Also the earthquakes and erosion wore down mush of the hills and mountains they had known. You also need to realize that some mountains did rise more during the crustal shift and volcanic activity changed older mountains and made new ones. Speaking of vulcanism, since the changes happened where pockets of lava were once under certain locations our present, in the new present for the MacMurchaids those that hadn't been released during the volcanic activity those pockets would be now under new zones/regions of the continents which moved over them.
